It’s January again, and that means that the yearly Sundance Film Festival has come again. This is the time of the year that the independent filmmakers present the films they have spent good money to make. We get the films that were made outside of the studio system, which if last year is any indication, will turn out better than anything Hollywood executives could even imagine.
Every year, I keep an eye on everything that will premiere at the festival, which ones get the highest critical ratings, which distributor bought them, and when they will be released. This year, we have some very interesting newcomers, and in this blog post, I’m going to talk about the 10 films I think look the most interesting. They are in no particular order. They are just the ones that I am most looking forward to.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Based on the novel of the same name by Emily M. Danforth, the film follows a young teenager named Cameron Post. When she is caught in a sexual encounter with another female classmate, her conservative aunt and uncle send her to a gay-conversion camp.
Aside from the fact that it stars Chloë Grace Moretz in the title role (one of my all-time favorite actesses), it’s a subject that I find very interesting. I, personally, am against the idea of gay-conversion classes, so I would like to see a story about it, whether it supports or condemns it.

Search
When his teenage daughter goes missing, a desperate father uses her laptop to track her whereabouts and solve the case.
Like Unfriended without the Internet demons, this seems like a very creative take on screenshot found footage. You know a movie like that is one that I will see no matter what, but it has a story that could qualify it as one of the best films of the year.

American Animals
Four best friends accidentally believe that they are characters in a movie. They then plan to pull off a major heist as their mission in their pretend film.
The concept seems very intriguing, and Evan Peters is starring. He has quickly grown to be one of my favorite actors because of his roles on American Horror Story, so to see him star in a movie like this makes it very enticing.

I Think We're Alone Now
In the wake of an apocalyptic event, a man creates an isolated life that finds very enjoyable. However, when a young girl arrives, he finds his tranquil existence disturbed.
The concept alone intrigues me. Anyone who’s willing to add some kind of twist on the post-apocalypse genre is good enough for me. However, it’s the stars that have me fully invested. Peter Dinklage plays the reclusive man, and Elle Fanning plays the woman. With that pairing, I can’t predict how this movie will be, which makes me super excited to see how it turns out.

Eighth Grade
This one follows a teenager through the last week of her eighth grade, attempting to survive it and make it to high school.
This film marks the directing debut of YouTuber Bo Burnham. The surprising part about this is that it’s not a YouTube Red film, but an A24 release (at this moment, they are the distributor, though it’s not officially confirmed). It’s a concept that seems interesting, so hopefully, Burnham can take advantage of its full potential.

Nancy
A young woman becomes convinced that she was kidnapped when she was a kid. When she meets a young couple she believes are her real parents, reality and fantasy begin to collide.
I am always partial to movies about kidnappings. For some reason, I’ve always found them to be thrilling and entertaining, as long as they bring some kind of fresh spin. This one sounds like it does, and I am interested to see how it turns out.

Sorry to Bother You
An office working discovers something more supernatural behind the success of his superiors.
The directing debut of rapper Boots Riley, this could either go really well or really terribly. The concept alone makes it sound like a feature length music video. However, the cast it exceptional (with Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, and Tessa Thompson), so I’m curious to see what it will turn out to be.

Blaze
A look at the life of country music star Blaze Foley.
I knew about this before the Sundance, because it’s the directing debut of Ethan Hawke (one of my all-time favorite actors). That alone makes me want to see it.

Wildlife
Set in the 1960s, a young boy becomes the witness to the destruction of his family as his mother begins an affair with another man.
This film marks the directing debut of Paul Dano. I am always open to actors making their debuts as filmmakers, so I am very excited to see how this one turns out.

Tyrel
Follows a group of friends who head up to a cabin in the woods to celebrate a wild birthday party (no, it’s not a horror film).
I don’t really know much about this one, but its simplicity is what really catches my eye. I want to know more, and see what it turns out to be.
